We primarily associate them with relaxation, thanks to the microelements found in plants. However, is that their only role? We are increasingly using essential oils to support the treatment of specific ailments and states of depression, benefiting from the natural essences they contain.

Essential oils have been used as effective remedies in natural medicine for over 5,000 years, with the earliest mentions of their use dating back to ancient Egypt, Macedonia, and India. Oriental aromas from the East are often associated with aromatherapy, which has been continuously practiced for millennia in many countries. It has positive effects in treating and preventing various ailments, on par with more advanced medications. Nonetheless, effective oils can also come from native regions. Nature therapy and herbal medicine are regaining popularity, especially when pharmaceutical methods and typical medications fail, to which we often develop resistance. The application of essential oils has a broad spectrum depending on individual needs. They can create a sense of bliss during relaxation, refresh our minds, and even have a soothing effect in cases of depression. We use oils not only in aromatherapy or to freshen the scent in our homes. Inhalation has a cleansing effect on the upper respiratory tract, and adding them to baths can lull us into pleasant sleep at the end of the day. Some scents have invigorating effects, enhancing concentration and stimulating creativity during work. Essential oils are mainly produced through distillation. By distilling a plant in water, two separate fractions are obtained, one of which is the fragrance in the form of oil, condensed at a temperature suitable for each raw material. The other fraction is typically a watery hydrosol, which has a less intense aroma and is not as long-lasting as the oil. It's important to note that essential oil is not the same as carrier oil, and its production has nothing to do with pressing. Distillation results in the formation of an ester, an oily carrier of fragrance, lighter than water. Each oil has a different density depending on the vaporization temperature during distillation.

Another method of obtaining oils is through the spinning of previously prepared raw materials under pressure. This is the case, for example, with essential oils derived from fruit peels, such as citrus oils. Some oils are also obtained by preparing a macerate of the main ingredient with fats (known as enfleurage) or by dissolving resins in water to obtain an oily consistency from a solid raw material. The prices of essential oils depend on the availability of raw materials, the ease of obtaining them, and the saturation of aromatic substances that can be separated in the form of esters. All essential oils have antibacterial properties, meaning that no bacteria can survive in them. It is also worth noting that essential oils have nothing to do with cosmetic fragrances, which are produced solely synthetically. Essential oils and fragrances have a fundamental difference. Mixing two essential oils results in interesting scents, while attempting the same with cosmetic fragrances is bound to fail.
